Interview: Derwin Daniels

What sparked your interest in pursuing a career in music initially? Was there a specific moment or experience that fueled your passion?

My dad and most of his friends were musicians. I saw him grab that horn case and head out the door to gigs. That was a normal occurrence in my house. Me and my younger brother could hear the local high school band from our backyard and we would march around the yard, him playing a drum and me on my clarinet. I was probably around 7 or 8 years old and he was 5. Music is just in our DNA.

Could you characterize your musical style and the genre(s) you associate with? Are there specific artists or musicians who have played a significant role in shaping your sound?

It would be in the Smooth Jazz style. I have played Blues, R&B, Funk, Country, Zydeco and Rock. I think those influences are in a lot of my original material. Of course my dad, godfather and others around me have shaped my sound. My sisters were older in my family and I heard their music as well as older brothers. Playing the saxophone I was encouraged by Charlie Parker. Once I started to learn his songs I realized the level of difficulty. Believe it or not I like trumpet players like Clifford Brown and Dizzy Gillespie. I have also learned from guitar players like Wes Montgomery and George Benson. Right now, I love the sax sound of Kirk Whalum. Soulful!

Share with us the inspiration behind your most recent single. What triggered the creative process for this specific piece?

The song “Brighter Than This” is a positive upbeat melody and groove. I was introduced to this piece by Felton Pilate from the group Confunkshun. He produced the song and asked me to take a listen. I instantly told him, let’s record this with tenor saxophone. JEG Multimedia has published the song and got it out to the public. I’m very excited to see how everything evolves.

In what way do you anticipate your latest song resonating with your existing fan base and attracting new listeners? What message or emotions do you aim for listeners to glean from the song?

I’ve had long time friends and fans listen to this single and give me a thumbs up on production and likable melody. I believe in chords and structures that are uplifting in songs. Those melodies and chords bring emotion to movies all the time. I want listeners to hear the song and hum the melody for the rest of the day!

How does this track contribute to the overarching narrative or theme of your upcoming album or project?

I am releasing an EP very soon with songs I have had remastered. Be on the lookout at www.derwindaniels.com. The theme is a musical journey through my lens.

Maintaining creativity and motivation can be challenging. Do you have any rituals or habits that you find instrumental in sustaining your artistic drive?

Sometimes I have to back away and ask myself, “are you still enjoying this journey with music?” My answer is always…YES.

Do you have any upcoming projects or releases that you’re particularly enthusiastic about? Can you offer any teasers or details?

I have discussed collaboration with artist from other genres and places on this planet. I ‘m looking forward to getting into those sessions and creating.
